There are several art galleries in Lanzarote. They offer a range of paintings and sculptures which include works by Spanish and international artists. The most famous artist from Lanzarote is Cesar Manrique (1919 – 1992) who has had a major impact on the island. He has designed many of the island’s tourist attractions and buildings.
Fundacion Cesar Manrique
One of the most important art galleries in Lanzarote is the Cesar Manrique Foundation. It is in Tahiche, Teguise in the centre of the island. The Foundation was set up in 1992 following the death of Cesar Manrique in a car accident that year. This art gallery is in the former house of the artist which is an incredible place. The white building was built around five lava bubbles created by a volcanic eruption. The house and gardens contain his private collection of art work, plus works by other artists like Miro and Picasso. It is open from 10am – 6pm from Monday to Saturday.
Casa de Cultura and the Galeria de Yaiza
These can be found in the small town of Haria in the south of the island. The Casa de Cultura is the ormer home of the Lanzarote writer and politician, Benitio Perez Armas. The Galeria de Yaiza is near to the church.
Castillo de San Jose – International Museum of Contemporary Art
Another of the famous art galleries in Lanzarote is the Lanzarote Museum of Contemporary Art.This is a small contemporary art exhibition in Arrecife, inside the San Jose castle, which features work by Cesar Manrique and other international, contemporary artists, such as Botero, Miro and Picasso. It is open Monday – Friday 9am – 1pm and 4.30pm – 7.30pm, and 9am – 1pm on Saturdays. The admission fee is 4€. There is alos a Cesar Manrique designed restaurant here.
Galleries in Arrecife
Other art galleries in Lanzarote can be found in the capital of Arrecife, where there are several art rooms such as the Casa de la Cultura Agustin de la Hoz, the Punto de Encuentro con el Arte and the Galeria el Aljibe.
Cabra Cabra Galleria de Arte in Teguise near the church is an art gallery of works by the owner Dominic Murray and features humourous goat paintings and landscapes. It is located just off the main square by the church.
Galerie Ateiler Guttenburger Schultz Teseguite in Teseguite, near Teguise. This is a private collection of art work and ceramics where you can usually see an artist working on site.
Galeria de Arte Enmala in Mala, Haria. This house has a small collection of art, but a range of art.
Angel Cabrera in Teguise is a small gallery/shop that sells the artist’s watercolour paintings. hand-painted t-shirts, cards, ceramics and lamps.
Other art galleries in Lanzarote are the Galeria de Arte Espiral in C.C. Montaña Tropical, Puerto del Carmen, Galeria de Arte Convento de Santa Domingo in Guadalupe, and the Galeria de Arte Sur in Teguise.
Art galleries in Lanzarote are located all around the island and are worth taking a look at. There are also many artists who sell their paintings and works at the island’s markets.
